MAPLETON, Iowa -- Donald Flanigan, 69, of Mapleton died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury, Iowa. Burial will be in Danbury Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a vigil wake service at 7 p.m. followed by a rosary conducted by the Knights of Columbus, all at the church. Visitation will resume 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home of Danbury and Mapleton.

Donald Martin Flanigan was born Aug. 2, 1934, in Sioux City, the son of Martin Joseph and Henrietta (Murphy) Flanigan. He was raised on a farm in Soldier Township in Crawford County. He attended rural school and graduated from Charter Oak High School with the class of 1963. He joined the Army National Guard at Denison while in high school and was honorably discharged in July 1959.

On Nov. 21, 1964, Donald was united in marriage to Darlene Berne at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll, Iowa. He worked in long-distance trucking until 1971. He then farmed until May 1991, and became an independent contractor for Roadway Package Systems, which later changed to FedEx Ground Package Delivery in Sioux City. Don received a 10-year Safe Driving Award from FedEx in 2002. He retired in September 2002.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury, and the Knights of Columbus. He had served his parish as a Eucharistic Minister since November 1987. Don enjoyed reading and loved to visit with family and friends.

Survivors include Darlene, his wife of 39 years; two sons, Bryan of Mapleton, and Dennis and his fiancee, Mellisa Salmen of Sioux City; a grandson, Keegan; a brother, Robert Flanigan of Sioux City; and a sister, JoAnne Seufert and her husband, Don of Ute, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Joseph.
