Gwen Younger Sorenson, 91, of Houston, Tx., formerly of Onawa, Ia., died Monday, July 19, 1999, in Houston, TX.

Gwen was born November 19, 1907, in Onawa, IA, the daughter of W.C. and Katherine (Polly) DeLashmutt. She attended school in Whiting and graduated in 1925. She graduated from nursing school in Kansas City. On July 23, 1927, she married Emil E. Younger in Kansas City, MO. After the couple returned to Onawa, she was employed at the Deering Hospital in Onawa until 1940. She moved to Scottsbluff, NE and later to California. She returned to Onawa in 1946 and continued nursing again at the Deering Hospital and later at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa. Mr. Younger died September 1, 1971, in Onawa.

She married Chris L. Sorenson on October 12, 1972 at Elk Point, SD. The couple made their home in Onawa. Mr. Sorenson died June 27, 1988, in Onawa.

She is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Carolyn and Marvin Winquist of Houston, TX, Pollyann and Raymond Shaw of Merriam, KS, and Nancy Sue and Dr. Ken Heflin of Glendale, CA; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Kay Burton of Camerillo, CA; two step-daughters, Lillian Simpson Whitehorn and husband, Willis of Onawa, IA, and Norma Cundiff and husband, Jerry of Council Bluffs, IA; two stepsons, Sigurd and wife, Carol Sorenson of Omaha, NE, and Herbert and wife, Marie Sorenson of Cle Elum, WA; and many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; two sisters, Lucille Flynn and Leone Reed; and a brother, Harper DeLashmutt.

Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 19, 1999, at the Pearson Funeral Chapel in Onawa, IA, with Lyle Schober and Craig Winquist officiating. The organist, Susan Icher, accompanied the vocalists, David and Jenelle Icher, in the selections "My Savior's Love" and There Hath Not Failed".

"Honorary bearers were Bill Henry, Fred Henry and John Henry. Graveside music, "Called Home To Rest" was sung by the grandchildren.

Interment was in Jordan Township Cemetery at Soldier, IA, with arrangements by the Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, IA.
