Helen Bennett, 89, of Mapleton, died Monday, November 21, 1983, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services were at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 25, at Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Mapleton, with Pastor Richard Krambeck officiating.

Mrs. Bennett was born January 29, 1894, to Sherman and Harriett (White) Kirk, in Fairbury, Nebraska. She moved as a child with her parents to Berkeley, California, where they lived for two years. They later moved to Dea Moines where she graduated from West High School and Drake University. Helen married Brig. Gen. Oliver P. Bennett, Sr., on September 18, 1917, at Des Moines, Iowa. They lived in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for two years and in 1919 moved to Mapleton, Iowa. Oliver P. Bennett. Sr died December 7, 1973.

She was presented a 60-year membership award by Loren Hollister Post 496, American Legion Auxiliary in 1982. She was an active member of the Mapleton Civic Club, a member of the Order of Eastern Star, and the last charter member of PEO.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, daughter, and brother.

Survivors include two sons, James of Des Moines, and Kirk of Mapleton, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Bennett of Chicago, Illinois, and Miss Virginia Kirk of Nashville, Tennessee; nine
grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Greg Kenner, Peter Steinback, Samuel Williamson, Glen Marsh, J.P. Cook, and Perry O'Connor.
