Mrs. Ruth Mae Dean, 72, of Mapleton died Saturday, September 3, 1983, in a Battle Creek nursing home after a short illness.

Services were at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dick Krambeck officiated. Burial was in the Mount Hope Cemetery
in Mapleton. A prayer service was held at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Walter Funeral Home.

Mrs. Dean, the former Ruth Mae Whittenmyer, was born on September 10, 1910 to William and Minnie (Walter) Whittenmyer in BonHomme County, near Avon, South Dakota. She moved to Moorhead with her family as a child and later returned to South Dakota. She married Leo A. Dean November 12,1927 in Dakota City, Nebraska. The couple farmed in the Castana-Mapleton areas. He died in 1981, and she then moved into Mapleton. She also worked as a clerk at the Ben Franklin store in Mapleton for about 20 years.

Mrs. Dean was a member of the St. John's United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include one son, Leo Jr. of Mapleton; five daughters, Mrs. Connie Schleis of South Sioux City, Mrs. Norma Plough of Denison, Mrs. John (Shirley) Schoenherr of Ida Grove, Judith Dean of Mapleton and Mrs. Louie (Susan) Hargens of Schleswig; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were William Christensen, Roy Reichards, Gary Beedle, Bill Hagerdon, Lawrence McGrain and Cecil Utterback.

Her honorary pallbearers were her grandchildren.
