The Anthon Herald
10 November 1943

News of the death Thursday evening of Ralph Walling of Onawa in a motorcycle accident came as a great shock to relatives and a host of friends in the Anthon community where he was born and reared.

As salesman for the Keitges Candy Company of Onawa, Ralph called on numerous customers in Anthon every week and had been in town only the day before his untimely death at the age of 28 years, 9 months and 18 days.

Walling suffered a broken neck when the motorcycle he was riding went out of control and left highway 75 about a mile north of Whiting, according to Dr. E.E. Gingles, Monona County Coroner, who investigated.

Born January 16, 1915, in Anthon to Mr. and Mrs. John Walling, now residing in California, the deceased grew to manhood in this community and was graduated from the Anthon High School in 1932. The past several years he operated a candy and tobacco route for his uncle, Justin Keitges of Onawa, and had built up an excellent business over a wide territory.

Survivors include the widow and two daughters, residing in Onawa. His father, Mildred, one of his sisters, and his brother, Jack, seaman first-class of the U.S. Navy, were among those present at the funeral services which were conducted in St. John's Catholic Church in Onawa at 9 a.m. Monday. Burial was in Mt. St. Joseph's Cemetery at Anthon on Tuesday afternoon, being postponed because of the snowstorm. Rev. Fr. A.M. Conlon of Anthon officiated at the graveside services.
