WHITING, Iowa -
Sophie Josephine Richards, 87, of Whiting died Friday, Dec. 13, 1996, at her residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Congregational Church in Whiting, with the Rev. Patricia G. Minnick officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today, with an Order of the Eastern Star service at 7 p.m., at the Pearson Funeral Home of Onawa, Iowa.
Mrs. Richards was born May 21, 1909, in Strum, Wis., the daughter of Martin and Amelia (Johnson) Bjorklund.
She attended high school in Strum.
She married Forest A. Richards on June 8, 1932, in Eau Claire, Wis. and the couple moved to Whiting in 1932. She was employed as a waitress for the Whiting Marina for 14 years. He died Nov. 9, 1960, in Onawa.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Whiting and was active in the Women's Group, the Whiting Chapter 470 Order of the Eastern Star, where she was a past matron and later a member of the Queen Esther Chapter 222 Order of the Eastern Star in Onawa. She also was a member of the Farm Bureau.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Margaret Ann and Harold Holverson of Soldier, Iowa; a stepson and his wife, Allan "Pat" and Georgia of rural Sloan, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Agnes Knock of Eau Claire.
She was preceded in death by a brother; two sisters; a stepson, Charles; and a stepdaughter, Jean Bild.
