Whiting MOTHER PASSES AWAY

MRS. EMELINE RAINS PASSED AWAY AT HOME OF HER DAUGHTERS, MONDAY

Came to Iowa seventy-five years ago. Was real pioneer of the State.

Funeral was held on Wednesday in Congregational Church in Whiting

Mrs. Emeline Rains, a pioneer resident of Whiting, Iowa, passed away at midnight Monday, September 21, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. W. Beatty, with whom she had lived for a number of years. She was born at Franklin, Indiana, on February 27, 1845. Her Parents were Fielding and Sarah Terhune Utterback both of whom were born in Kentucky and came from a sturdy and substantial Dutch ancestry.

Several of Mrs. Rains ancestors gave Colonial service as well as serving with honor during the Revolution. Having an ancestry like these, Mrs. Rains inherited much of the courage and indomitable spirit which characterized the pioneer, and which proved to invaluable to her later in life.

When 11 years of age his parents came by covered wagon to Story County, Iowa, living 1 year at Story City. Now Colo, Iowa. A year later they moved to Mills County. It was here during the next 10 years she saw much of the hardships of pioneer life, not only the great privations caused by the Civil war, but the sickness and suffering caused by contagious diseases and living in far remote places.

On December 7, 1865, she was married to William Jasper Rains, and with the bare necessities of life they established their little home on the open prairies a few miles from that of her parents. They lived on this farm (which was four miles north of Tabor) for twenty-two years, and where their children, with the exception of the two youngest, were born.

In March 1887, financial conditions made it necessary to give up this home and they came to Monona County and bought a farm one mile south of Whiting. Here their children grew to maturity and in 1902 the family moved to Whiting, at which place she has since resided.

Mrs. Rains was the mother of nine children, five of whom survive: Mrs. P. O. Weller, Chino, Calif.; Mrs. F. K. Robinson, Nampa, Idaho; Mrs. C. N. Whiting, Whiting, Iowa; L. L. Kline Ontario, Oregon, and Mrs. C. W. Beatty, Whiting, Iowa.

She is also survived by eleven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Her husband passed away December 22, 1908.

Mrs. Rains was the oldest living member of the Whiting Congregational church of which church she has been a member since its early organization.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Rains lived very close to their church and were devoted to its every interest. They imbued their family with the fine Christian principles which are such a rich heritage to them today.

The influence of her life and of the home she graced, will long be felt by her friends who are numbered by the score in this vicinity. This splendid influence is an unusual contribution to the community in which she lived.

Funeral services were held at the Congregational church in Whiting, Wednesday, conducted by her pastor. Rev. J. Robert Hoerner, assisted by Rev; G. H. Croker
