Ole G Olson, Beloved Pioneer of the Soldier Valley Passed Away August 25

Had Been In Failing Health For Some Time—Was At One Tie A Merchant In Soldier – Funeral Services Were Held At The Home September 1

The democrat editor is grieved this week to be compelled to print the obituary of a good friend, Ole G Olson of Soldier. It has been our pleasure t know Mr. Olson for a long number of years and his sterling worth, his services to his home, community have been many and he will be sorely missed.

Although he has been in failing health for the past year or more, Mr. Olson was of that disposition where he thought not of himself but of others, shielding those who might and were happy to wait upon him. He was a true Christian man and has gone to the reward which he has richly earned.

Ole G Olson was born in Sundalen, Norway, December 26, 1864. He was the son of Gunder and Elisabeth Olson. At the age of 6 years he immigrated with his parents to America and located in Iowa County, Iowa where he was reared and grew to manhood. There he attended the common school and received religious instructions and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith by the Rev. Jacob V DL Frost.

At the age of 18 he moved to Shelby County, Iowa where he resided until 1893 where he moved to Monona County, Iowa. In 1913 he moved to Kanabec County, Minnesota. In the fall of 1914 he returned to Soldier and entered the mercantile business in partnership with O.H. Foss and Marlin Evenson. In 1915 he sold his interest in said firm and again took up farming.

On April 19, 1890 he was united in marriage to Enger Gurmia Helpin who preceded him to the great beyond on November 17, 1907. This union was blessed with 6 children namely Grant Edwin, Chris Thomas, Elma Maydolene, Mina Agnes, Charlotte Goldies and Bilma Margaret who mourn the loss of a kind and loving father. But their loss is his gain.

He was a man of quiet and kindly disposition, and his friends were numbered by his acquaintances. He was a sincere and devout Christian and longed to leave this vale of tears and enter the Heavenly Glory. It was his prayer to live to see his two sons and four daughters grow to womanhood and manhood. This prayer the Lord has granted.

In May 1931 he was taken ill with cardiac failure and was taken to the Deering Hospital at Onawa. From this he rallied and seemed to gain strength. How-ever on the 26th of July he suffered a relapse and returned to the hospital On August 13 he was taken back to his home. His daughter Mina, a trained nurse returned home and gave him the best that loving hands could give him. After 6 weeks of illness he departed this life quietly and peacefully at 5 o’clock, Saturday afternoon August 26, 1931. His last wish was to spend his last days in the home he so much loved. He was at the time of his death 65 years, 8 months and 3 days of age.

He was a member of the Soldier Valley – Lutheran Church and a very staunch believer in the Doctrine of his church. His children has lost a friend ad a father and the community a worthy and honorable citizen.

Funeral services were conducted from the home at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 1, 1931 and at the Lutheran Church south of Soldier at 2 o’clock by Rev. J Hoifjeld assisted by Rev. O B Anderson of Onawa. Interment was made in the Soldier Valley Cemetery.
