Onawa Mother Called Home
MRS. A. S. PAYNE, MONONA COUNTY PIONEER, DIED YESTERDAY

Was born In Pennsylvania November 11, 1873. Moved to Monona County when 9-year-old. Leaves husband, two sons and one daughter.

On Wednesday morning at the Onawa hospital occurred the death of Mrs. A. S. Payne, who at the present time had the distinction of being Onawa's only gold star mother. During the past year, Mrs. Payne had been a great sufferer and had undergone three major operations in an endeavor to regain her health, the last one being performed Tuesday morning, which seemingly was successful, but early Wednesday morning she was stricken with paralysis and at 7:15 her heavenly Father called her to that Home that knows no sorrow, no pain, no tears.

She lived a quiet unassuming life, yet possessed that womanly grace and beauty of character that endeared her to those that knew her best. Her home was enshrined with that sacrificial love and devotion that only true mothers render, and her family will gratefully rise up and call her blessed. Neighbors and friends too, feel enriched by having known and loved her.

Edith Depue was born in North Hampton County, Pennsylvania November 11, 1873 and came to Monona County at the age of 9 years where she has resided since. The past 12 yers she has lived in Onawa. In 1894 she was united in marriage to John Grimsley and to this union 3 sons were born, Albert who gave his life in the World War, Sam, of Sioux City, and Willard, of Carnavon. Mr. Crimsley passed away In 1906. On November 6, 1912, she was united in marriage to Andrew S. Payne, and one daughter, Dorothy, was born to this union who with the husband and two sons survive.

She also leaves three grandchildren, one brother, Arthur Depue of Clinton, 5 sisters, Mrs. Bertha Harrison, Cedar Falls, Mrs. Alice Boncher, Sterling, Colorado, Mrs. Nellie Konkle, Burlington, Mrs. Nettie Foster, Moville, and Mrs. Anna Lester, of Sterling Colorado.

At an early age she united with the Methodist church, later transferring her membership to the Christian church and lived a consistent Christian life, and died firmly believing in God, who doeth all things well.

Funeral services will be held from the Christian church Friday afternoon at two o'clock, with the pastor, Rev. Orval E. Walker, officiating, and burial will take place in the local cemetery where the American Legion Auxiliary, of which she was a member, will conduct a short memorial service. The Brown Funeral Home conducted the funeral.
