Orval C. Claus, 85, Onawa, Iowa died Sunday, January 4, 2009 at a Sioux City hospital following an accident at his home.

Orval was born April 12,1923 at Hornick, Iowa, the son of Jacob and Louisa (Steinhoff) Claus. He was raised in the Hornick area and attended Hornick Public School.

He was a farm laborer at Sergeant Bluff, Iowa and later Lake Park, Iowa before entering the United States Army November 28, 1944. Orval served his country during World War II and was stationed in the European Theater where he was engaged in the Rhineland Battle. He was honorably discharged August 1, 1946.

Orval and Phyllis L. Borgman were united in marriage June 20, 1947 at Sioux City, Iowa. They made their home in Onawa where Orval operated Cities Service Station and Tank Wagon. Later, he was a city mail carrier for the United States Post Office for 24 years.

He was affiliated with Onawa United Methodist Church; a 50-year member of American Legion David McNeill Post 129 and Monona County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2694. He also served on the Onawa Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis of Onawa; a daughter and her husband, Barbara and Kevin Ketelsen of Waukee, IA; a son and his wife, Barry and Suzanne Claus of Sioux City, IA; five grandchildren, Becky and Jim Popp of Waukee, IA, Ken and Natalie Ketelsen of Des Moines, IA, Renae and Jeff Lindsey of W. Des Moines, IA, Mitch and Alisha Claus of Sioux City, and Beth and Brian McKnight of Sioux City; a great grandson, Carter Claus; a great granddaughter, Cameron Lindsey and a brother-in-law, John Herron of Chadron, NE.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Iva Roarson, Yetta Gallagher and Marian Herron.

Funeral services were 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, January 7,2009 at Rush Family Chapel at Onawa, Iowa with Pastor Catie Newman officiating. Music selections were organ solos, "In The Garden" and "How Great Thou Art" provided by Ruth Jordan, organist. Burial was in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation was 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Casket bearers were Jim Popp, Ken Ketelsen, Jeff Lindsey, Mitch Claus, Brian McKnight and Mike Wilt.
