Hazel Irene Obrist, 92, of Central City died on Friday, October 25 at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa. Services are being held Thursday, October 31, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City, NE with Rev. Joy Savage officiating. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery. Visitation was Wednesday, October 30 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home.

On March I, 1910, Hazel was born in rural Shelby to Thomas J. and Helena (Krumbach) Skidmore. She received her education at Victor Schools in Polk County and Shelby High School. On June 1, 1930 Hazel I Skidmore and Gerald L. Obrist were united in marriage in Holyoke, CO. They lived on several farms in Polk County until moving to Central City in 1961. They owned and operated the Central Motel until 1964. Hazel worked at several businesses in Central City including Justice and Locke Drug Co., Nordstedts, and the Hallmark Store. Gerald died on January 2, 1977.

Hazel enjoyed gardening and making quilts.

Survivors include one son, Gerald, Jr. and Ruth Obrist of Geneva, NE;, two daughters, Berniece Miller of Onawa and Carolyn and Lee Gain of Gresham, NE; one sister Fern Uehling of Lincoln, NE; eleven grandchildren; twenty-four great grandchildren; and two great- great grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one grandson, Dennis Cain, one great grandson, Bobby Gray, two brothers, John and George Skidmore; and four sisters, Wilma Quinn, Carrie Drovwal, Marie Glatter, and Theresa Class.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Dean and Gary Cain, Brad, Gaylen, Byron and Douglas Thelander. Honorary Pallbearers were Harold Gray, Douglas Miller, Terry Steinkamp, Gary Grashorn, and Dan Waldron.
