Charles E. "Chuck" Lane, 77, of LeMars died unexpectedly, on Saturday, November 16, 2002, following surgery at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD.

Charles Edgar Lane was born April 12, 1925 at Onawa, IA, the son of George Edgar "Ed" and Minnie W (Birk) Lane. He was raised near Onawa and graduated from Onawa High School in 1941. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served overseas on the U.S.S. Bates in the Normandy Invasion in June of 1944. He was selected to become a member of the V-12 Program. His training took place at St. Ambrose College in Davenport, IA and the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI. After his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1946 Chuck attended Westmar College in LeMars, where he received his B.A degree. He also received his M.A degree from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. In addition, he had a C.P.A. Certificate from the State of Iowa.

Charles E. Lane married Mary Kathleen Hauser of Struble on June 1, 1948 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Struble. Chuck was then employed by the C.P.A firm of Keightley and Pederson in Sioux City for several years and then was employed for a couple of years with Montgomery Ward and Company of Chicago. Chuck and Mary Kathleen moved to East Northport, NY in 1955. He spent the remainder of his career with Grumman Aerospace Company (Northrop-Grumman) on Long Island for a total of 34 years. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Bethpage Federal Credit Union on Long Island for 21 years. Chuck retired in 1990 from Grumman and from the Credit Union Board in 1995. The couple retired to LeMars in June of 1995.

Charles "Chuck" was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Struble. He was also an active member of the American Legion (Wasmer Post #241) in LeMars, where he had served as Commander for two years. He was also a member of the 40/8 Club. He was an active volunteer for various organizations in the community.

Chuck enjoyed bowling, reading, traveling, and gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Kathleen of LeMars; two daughters, Kristin Lane of Le Mars and Julia Lane of Islip, NY, a granddaughter, Kylie Forbes of Islip, NY; a sister Mary Ann McFarland and her husband, Bob of Whiting, IA; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was, preceded in death by his parents; a sister Dorothy Fouts; and two brothers-in-law, Raymond Fouts and James E. Hauser.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 20, 2002 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Struble, with Reverend Terry Roder presiding. Burial was in the Parish Cemetery. Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion conducted graveside Military Honors.

A rosary was held at 4:00 p.m. and the Scriptural Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 19 at Feuerstein Funeral Home in LeMars.
