William "Bill" Johnson, ,79, Onawa, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 19, 2004 at Pleasant View Care Center, Whiting, Iowa.

William "Bill" Johnson was born "October 9, 1925 at Onawa, Iowa, the son of Ross C. and Mabel Amelia (Cole) Johnson. He was raised in the Onawa area and graduated from Onawa High School in 1944. He joined the United States Marine Corps June 29, 1944. He attained the rank of Corporal and was an amphibian tractor operator in the Pacific Area where he participated in action in Okinawa and Ryukyu Island during WW II. He was discharged July 30,1946.

He was an independent general contractor with Berry Lumber and the Monona County Fair Board and was an animal control officer for the city of Onawa.

He was a member of First Christian Church of Onawa.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands. Tammy and Scot Stanford and Kelly and Joseph LaSalle all of Spokane, WA; four grandchildren, Cory, Lindsay and Ryan Stanford and Joey LaSalle and his wife Noel; a great granddaughter Alexis LaSalle; two brothers, Ross C. Johnson and his wife Linda of Onawa and Gerald "Pete" Johnson of Sergeant Bluff, IA; a sister, Marian "Dolly" Maxwell of Lakewood, CA and a brother-in-law, Howard Rogers of Onawa.

He was, preceded in death by his parents and a sister Mary Ann Rogers.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 22, 2004 at Rush Family Chapel in Onawa with visitation two hours prior to the service. Music selections were "Angels Among Us" and "American Soldier" and the recessional was "Marine Corps Hymn". Burial was in Onawa Cemetery with military services conducted by the United States Marine Corps.

Casket bearers were Vernon Myers, Billy Butters, Dennis Bonnes, Red Richardson, Don Savery and Dale Crawford.
