William "Buffalo Bill" Sanders 1943 - 2007

ONAWA, Iowa -- William "Buffalo Bill" Sanders, 63, of Onawa died suddenly Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, in Onawa.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Steven Hetzel officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

William J. Sanders was born Oct. 24, 1943, in Onawa, the son of Fred and Rosalie (Kirk) Sanders. He was raised in the Onawa area and graduated from Onawa High School. He later earned his bachelor's degree from Iowa State University. He returned to Onawa, where he had been a lifelong farmer.

He had always been a history buff and had built a wealth of knowledge on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. He had generously given his time for all aspects of Lewis and Clark and Friends of Discovery.

He was a member of Friends of Discovery, Onawa Jaycees and Iowa State Athletics Fan Club. In addition to history, he enjoyed following athletics and watching movies.

Survivors include his mother, Rosalie of Onawa; three daughters, Jennifer Sanders and her special friend, James Erlandson of Whiting, Iowa, Amy Smith of Elk Point, S.D., and Terri Sanders and her special friend, Dave Ellison of Des Moines; a son and his wife, Charlie and Michelle Sanders of Mason City, Iowa; and eight grandchildren, Christian, Trinity and Matthew Smith, Jesse Benson, David Ellison and Miriah, Julie and Jerimiah Sanders.

He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Sanders; a sister, Jean Sanders; and a grandson, Timothy Sanders.
