ONAWA, Iowa -- Clifford R. Hess, 95, of Onawa, formerly of Anthon, Iowa, died Friday, April 30, 2004, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Castana Community Church in Castana, Iowa, with the Revs. Bob Fritzmeier and Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be in Piero Bethel Cemetery, rural Anthon. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Clifford was born April 1, 1909, in Ida Grove, Iowa, the son of Burton and Ethel (Grace) Hess. He graduated from Lawton (Iowa) High School in 1926, and attended Morningside College.

He married Florence Shoemaker on June 6, 1934, in Bronson, Iowa. She died Feb. 14, 1972. He later married Lois Brink on Aug. 15, 1981, in Castana.

He worked for Eberly Contracting of Lawton, Iowa, in dirt construction and farmed near Anthon from 1942 until moving to Onawa in 1999.

He was a member of Castana Community Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lois of Onawa; two sons and their wives, Jon and Carmen Hess of Moville, Iowa, and Joe and Carolyn Hess of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Vicki Hess of Rock Island, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Patty Brink of Minneapolis; four stepsons, Bill Brink and his wife, Cathy, of Castana, Ardel Brink of Denver, Colo., Gary Brink and his wife, Sherrie, of Alexandria, Minn., and Roger Brink and his wife, Susie, of Onawa; 17 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Florence, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Charles; an infant daughter, Mary Isabelle; and a brother, Roscoe Hess.
