Mae Craford 1906 - 2002

ONAWA, Iowa -- Mae Craford, 96, of Onawa died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Onawa, with the Rev. John Noer officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Mae's home in Onawa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Mae was born Sept. 30, 1906, in Odebolt, Iowa, the daughter of George and Rose (Hoefling) Mandernach. She graduated from Odebolt High School and later earned her bachelor of arts degree from Iowa State Teachers College. She married Magnus Craford in August 1936. He passed away in 1952.

She was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ and PEO. Mae will be remembered by many in Onawa and Blencoe as a dedicated teacher who was sure that knowing history and geography would make her students better citizens. She was appreciated as a special person and close friend to three generations of Iowans, reaping the rewards of a life shared with others, and she was an extraordinary mom who lived the adage, "If you love something, set it free."

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Roseanne and Stephen Kane of Silver Spring, Md.; two sons and their wives, John Kent and Sharon of Old Saybrook, Conn., and Magnus George and Carol of Los Altos Hills, Calif; six grandchildren, Aaron Kane, Rivka Kane, Rena Malka Kane, David Craford, Steven Craford and John Paul Craford; four great-grandchildren, Cassidy Rose Craford, Hanna Mae Craford, Noam Kane and Maya Kane; and a sister Ethel Mandernach.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Robert.

Memorials in Mae's name may be directed to First Congregational United Church of Christ in Onawa or the Onawa Library Fund.
