ONAWA, Iowa -- Pauline H. Smith, 84, of Onawa died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Charles V. Layton officiating. Burial will be in Whiting Cemetery in Whiting, Iowa. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.

Pauline Sylvia Hall was born on the family farm near Whiting on May 7, 1918, the daughter of Everett and Grayce (Abel) Hall. She attended Whiting Schools and, after graduating, Pauline attended Iowa State University and received a degree in home economics. She taught in schools in Blooming Prairie, Minn., and in Onawa at West Monona Schools for 22 years, retiring in 1983.

Pauline was married to Ernest Morse Smith on May 13, 1942, in Whiting. They farmed for many years and then moved into Onawa. Most of her life was spent in the Onawa area except when the couple lived in Ohio while Ernest was in the service.

She was a member of United Methodist Church in Onawa, Eastern Star, General Federated Women's Club and Burgess Health Center Auxiliary. She enjoyed her flowers.

Survivors include five children, Roger and his wife, Mary Smith of Sioux City, Ernest and his wife, Lyla Smith of Elm Creek, Neb., Shirley and her husband, Kent McAdon of Adel, Iowa, Judy and her husband, Richard Ignatowski of Arvada, Colo., and Phyllis and her husband, Verne Olson of Overland Park, Kan.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Doris Kadlub of Whiting.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ernest in 1978; and two sisters, Bernice Vaughan and Winifred Hall.

Memorials may be given in her name to United Methodist Church or the Burgess Health Center Auxiliary.
