MOORHEAD, Iowa -- Richard H. "Dick" Determan, 87, of Onawa, Iowa, formerly of Moorhead, died Thursday, July 6, 2006, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Moorhead Christian Church, with the Rev. Ron Keith officiating. Burial will be in Spring Valley Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Leigon Peter A. Hansen Post 365. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Richard Henry Determan was born Nov. 26, 1918, in Breda, Iowa, the son of Edward and Elizabeth (Schraeder) Determan. He was raised in the Breda area and graduated from St. Bernard's Catholic School.

Dick and Veryl Jenson were united in marriage on April 10, 1939, in Ponca, Neb. They made their home in Onawa, where he was employed at the Red and White Grocery Store in Onawa. During World War II, he served his country in the U.S. Army from March 1944 until his discharge in April 1946. He was stationed in Okinawa and was in the Ryukus campaign. When he returned home, he joined his father-in-law in the operation of Moorhead Locker and Grocery. The couple continued the operation until their retirement in 1981.

He was a member of Moorhead Christian Church, American Legion Peter A. Hansen Post 365, Willow Vale Country Club, which he served on the board and the Mapleton and Onawa Conservation board.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Veryl of Onawa; two daughters and their husbands, Pat and Roger Klotz of Anaheim, Calif., and Kaye and Bob Dunlop of Sioux City; a son and his wife, Bob and Olga Determan of Lindstrom, Minn.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ethel Snyder of Wall Lake, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Orville, Wilford, Cletus and Wayne; and a sister, Jackie Buelt.
