Sheryl, the daughter of Howard and Marion (Johnson) Smith, was born on a farm outside of Battle Creek, IA, on Sept. 4, 1944. She grew up on the farm located northeast of Battle Creek and graduated from Battle Creek High School with the class of 1962.

During her high school days, Sheryl met the love of her life Marshall Uhl. On July 5, 1962, Sheryl and Marshall were united into marriage at the St. Mary’s Rectory of Danbury, IA. The couple relocated to Kansas so Marshall could further his education and receive his vocational technical education training. While in Kansas Sheryl and Marshall welcomed their first child Dena.

The couple relocated back to Battle Creek, IA, before settling down on the farm outside of Danbury, IA. During this time Sheryl and Marshall were blessed with three more children Dan, Kirk, and Kim. Sheryl was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who dedicated her time tending to her family’s needs. She was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and shared the love of her Lord with her family.

Sheryl’s love for cooking was prevalent. Whether it was her famous fried chicken or her special cakes for birthdays and holidays, no one ever left hungry. Her door was always open to guests, relatives, and neighbors, with generous hospitality at every visit. She enjoyed cooking, cleaning, decorating for holidays, tending to her flowers, gardening, playing cards (500 and euchre), marbles, reading, watching television, dancing, music (50’s, 60’s and Elvis were her favorite). Her love of dancing led Marshall and Sheryl to many square dances and to winning a jitter bug contest.

Sheryl adored and treasured her moments spent with family, especially her grandchildren. She will be remembered fondly for her quiet, gentle, kind, and thoughtful ways.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 56 years Marshall Uhl of Danbury, IA; daughter Dena Schroeder of Denison, IA and her children Austin, Amanda (significant other Drew Glenn), Ali; son Kirk (significant other Connie Spatz) Uhl of Anthon, IA and his son Charlie Spatz; daughter Kim (Mike) Pope of Oto, IA and their daughter Kysa Moore; daughter-in-law Nancy Uhl of Anthon, IA; brothers Craig (Deb) Smith of Excelsior Springs, MO and Wayne Smith of Tucson, AZ; many nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Howard and Marion Smith; son Dan Uhl; son-in-law Greg Schroeder; and sister-in-law Mary Smith.

A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thurs., Dec. 20, 2018, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Danbury with Father Richard D. Ball and Father Andy Sohm officiating.
