CAROLINE EHLERS DIES AT NURSING HOME

Mrs. Caroline Ehlers was born April 2, 1894 in Charter Oak, Iowa. She was the daughter of Albert and Caroline Martin.

She died Sunday, May 4, 1980 at the Maple Heights Nursing Home after a lingering illness. She was 86 years, 1 month and 2 days old when she died.

Mrs. Ehlers spent her early childhood years on a farm near Mapleton. She graduated from the Lutheran Hospital nursing program in Sioux City, Iowa in 1920. She worked full and part-time as a nurse in vaious cities until 1955.

She married Alfred Carl Ehlers of Fort Dodge, Iowa, on January 18,, 1922. He preceded her in death on May 20, 1946. One son, James, was born to this union.

The Ehlers family lived in various Iowa communities which included Fort Dodge, Pomeroy, Lake Park, and Denison. They lived in Boulder, Colorado at the time of Mr. Ehler's death.

Caroline Ehlers was baptized May 6, 1894 and confirmed on March 24, 1907 at Immanual Lutheran Church of Soldier Township. She has been a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church. She retired in Mapleton in her home at 606 Main Street in 1955 where she lived until she moved to the nursing home in November of 1979. She was an active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and was a member of the various women's organizations, including the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and the Lutheran Church Women. She also was active in the Mepleton Senior Citizen organization.

She leaves to mourn: one son, Pastor James Ehlers of Madison, Wisconsin; one granddaughter, Mrs. Barbara Breitbach of Madison, Wisconisn; one grandson, David Ehlers of Denver, Colorado and a great-granddaughter, Angela Breitbach. She also leaves: one sister, Mrs. Eliza Vesy of Tucson, Arizona; two brothers, John Martin of Mapleton and Carl Martin of Pomeroy, Iowa.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, five brotherss and one sister.

Following a Christian funeral service at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, her body was committed to the ground at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Mapleton, on May 8, 1980.

Pallbearers were, Randy Jochims, Clifford Martin, Edgar Rossow, Eldon John, Paul Peterson and Adrian Sanford.
