OBITUARY

Elizabeth Dorathea Maria Marten, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Rohde, was born April 25, 1897, at Mapleton, Iowa. She lived her entire life in the Mapleton community. She was married to Herman Marten on March 4, 1915, at Mapleton. To this union two daughters were born. Herman preceded her in death on April 8, 1953.

Elizabeth was baptized on May 23, 1897, at Immanual Lutheran Church in Soldier Township, and was confirmed in the Lutheran Faith on March 31, 1912, at Immanuel. She was a longtime faithful member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton. She was also a member of the Lutheran Church Women and the Lois Circle of this church.

Mr. and Mrs. Marten farmed in the Mapleton vicinity until 1952, at which time they retired and moved into the town of Mapleton, where she spent the remainder of her life. She lived at the Maple Heights Nursing Home for the last two years.

She died on Friday, July 22, 1983, at the Sioux City hospital after a short illness, and having reached the age of 86 years, 2 month, and 30 days.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Amanda (Edgar) Rossow of Battle Creek, Iowa, and Mrs. Pearl Jochims of Mapleton; eleven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She also leaves other distance relatives and a host of friends. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and eight brothers.

Pallbearers were Randy Jochims, Ronald Rossow, Dave Bartels, Dewey Jochims, John Myers and Larry McDermott.

Mrs. Marten was laid to rest in the Mount Hope Cemetery at Mapleton of the 25th day of July, 1983. Interment was by Walker Funeral Home of Mapleton.
