HERMAN MARTEN

Herman Emil Marten, son of Albert Marten and his wife, Caroline, nee Mundt, was born October 1, 1892, in Crawford county, near Charter Oak, Iowa.

He was baptized in the Christian faith by the Rev. Amstein November 13 of the same year and later as a young lad was confirmed in the Lutheran faith by the same pastor.

Mr. Marten was married to Elizabeth Rohde March 1, 1915. To this union two children were born. Amanda, now Mrs. Edward Rossow, and Pearl, now Mrs. Elmer Jochims.

Mr. Marten had resided in the Mapleton community for about 51 years, farming near Mapleton for over 40 years. At the time of his death he was making his home in Mapleton.

Mr. Marten died Wednesday morning, April 8, 1953, after a lingering illness, at the age of 60 years, 6 months and 8 days.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 1, 1953, at St. Matthew's Lutheran church in Mapleton, Rev. Daryl Schmidt officiated.

Interment was in Mt. Hope cemetery, Mapleton, under direction of Byers-Walter funeral service. Pallbearers were Vern Marten, Willis Marten, Harold Marten, Clifford Marten, Raymond Marten and James Ehlers.

Besides his widow and daughters, he is survived by four brothers, Gustave of Jefferson, Iowa, Albert and John of Mapleton, and Carl of Pomeroy, three sisters, Mrs. Henry Knief of Mapleton, Mrs. Caroline Ehlers of Battle Creek and Mrs. Eliza Vesey of Tucson, Arizona, also seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, William and Louis.
