ALBERT MARTEN

Albert Marten, son of Albert and Caroline Marten, was born on March 16, 1885 in Crawford county, Iowa, and died on Tuesday, May 16, 1961, after having suffered a stroke at his home. He had reached the age of 76 years and two months.

He was the second child in a family of ten children. During his young (in 1892) he came with his parents to a farm in Monona county near Mapleton. He farmed and resided in the Mapleton vicinity for the remainder of his life, having retired from farming in 1947 and moving into the town of Mapleton.

Mr. Marten was married to Ida Fester on October 12, 1910 in Willow township, Monona county, Ia. Two daughters and two sons were born to this union. Mr. and Mrs. Marten celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last October.

He was baptized during his infancy at St. John's Lutheran church in Charter Oak, and was confirmed into the Lutheran faith at Charter Oak in 1897 by the Rev. Amstein. He had been a longtime ember of St. Matthew's Lutheran church at Mapleton since coming to this area. He served as an Elder for several years and was a member of the Lutheran Laymens League and of the voters assembly. he also served as director to the Maple Township school board for several ears.

Survivors include his wife, Ia; two daughters, Mrs. William (Helen) Wettengel of Council Bluffs and Mrs. LeRoy (Alvera) Pohlad of Winter Park, Fla.; one son, Raymond of Mapleton, three grandchildren, two brothers, John of Mapleton, and Carl of Pomeroy; three sisters, Mrs. Henry Knief and Mrs. Caroline Ehlers, both of Mapleton and Mrs. Francis Vesey of Tucson, Ariz. He was preceded in death by one son, four brothers and his parents.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 19, 1916 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Matthew's Lutheran church with Rev. E. E. Greene officiating. Pallbearers were: Verne Marten, Clifford Marten, Rev. James Ehlers, Ralph Marten, Eldon Johnson and Edgar Rossow. Burial was in Mt. Hope cemetery under the direction of the Walter service.
