PIONEER SETTLER CALLED HOME

Death came peacefully early Monday evening Jan. 9, to Mrs. Caroline Mundt Marten at the home in Sioux City. Mrs. Marten had been a patient sufferer for a long time and her death had been been expected at any time for the past ten days. It was due to carcinoma. Most of the members of the family were present at the time of her death. She was 65 years, 1 month and two days old.

During her last illness she was given every attention loving hearts could devise and living hands execute. For the past year her daughters, Caroline and Eliza both graduates of the nurses training school of the Northern Hospital at Sioux City have been a constant attendance on their mother.

Mrs. Marten was a pioneer settler in the section coming to Crawford county from Province Hanover, Germany, in 1880. In 1882 she was married to Mr. Albert Marten at Denison. In 1900 the family came to Monona county locating on a farm near Mapleton, where they continued to live until they returned to town in 1909.

Ten children came to bless their union and nine of these are still living. William having passed away in 1914. The surviving relatives are: Gustav, Albert, John, Herman, Caroline, Mrs. Henry Kneif, Louis, Eliza and Carl.

Two brothers and three sisters also survive. The brothers are Fritz Mundt, Manilla and William Mundt, Dakota. The sisters are Mrs. Louise Mundt, Ricketts, Mrs. Minnie Wehking, Nemaha, and Mrs. Marie Uhde, of N Dak.

Mrs. Marten was a faithful member of St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran church and of the ladies aid soriety connected with the church.
