Funeral Services Are Held in Lutheran Church--Six Sons Are Pallbearers

Funeral services were held here Wednesday afternoon for Albert Emil Marten, 83-year-old Monona county pioneer farmer who passed away in his house Monday.

Rites were held in the Lutheran church with Rev. Hugo Nieting of Ute officiating.

Burial was in Mt. Hope cemetery with the Byers Funeral home in charge.

His six sons served as pallbearers.

Mr. Marten was born at Neudorf, Posen, Germany, November 8, 1858. At the age of 15 he came to America with his parents who settled in Crawford county, Ia.

On February 6, 1882, he was married to Miss Caroline Mundt of Denison. To this union ten children were born, seven sons and three daughters. His wife and one son preceded him in death.. Later he was married to Miss Kathrina Jesssen who also preceded him in death February 3, 1939.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. He was a charter member of st. John's Lutheran church of Charter Oak and of St. Matthew's Lutheran church in Mapleton. He came to Monona in 1899.

Surviving are six sons, Albert, John and Herman of Mapleton, Louis of Denison, Carl of Pomeroy and Gust of Ute, and three daughters, Mrs. Henry Knief of Mapleton, Mrs. Alfred Ehlers of Denison and Mrs. Frances Vasey of Tuscon, Ariz.

He also is survived by 23 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 1 brother, Gustav of Charter Oak, 6 daughters-in-law and 3 sons-in-law.
