WILLIAM MARTEN

William Marten died at the hospital in Rochester, Minnesota Saturday, January 17. He had been suffering from an incurable malady for some time and had gone to the eminent specialists at Rochester as a last hope. But the strength of the splendid young manhood of a year ago could not shake of the insidious and mysterious disease that effects the spleen and at last resignedly and peacefully he gave up the fight and passed on to the hope that lies beyond the grave.

He was a young man of acknowledged worth and had just applied his ambition and energy to opportunities that would have brought his success in the accumulation of property if he had been permitted to live the natural allotment of man. He was an upright citizen, a congenial neighbor and a worthy friend and his taking away is a loss to the community that will be felt far beyond the family circle.

He was married March 21, 1911, to Alvina Block, daughter of Henry Block, and lived on the C C Brewer placed, owned by his father-in-law, and the happy and industrious young couple faced a future of bright prospects and assured success.

About a year ago he felt the first symptoms of the disease that called for his life , and through, all that care and skill and money could do was done for him, it was of no avail. He dwells with the nobleman who once trod God's beautiful Earth and awaits the call of the promised resurrection.

He was born on a farm, near Charter Oak, 27 years ago and had lived his young life in the home circle of seven brothers and three sisters, his parents being Mr. and Mrs. Albert Marten who resided at Mapleton.

The funeral service was held at the Lutheran church in Mapleton, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Wehking, pastor, preaching and conducting the German Lutheran service.

A number of Castana people were present who thus wished to pay their last respect to an esteemed fellow citizen. The Times extends its sympathy to those who mourn, among which none feel it more heavenly than Henry Block who grieves for the loss of a son and the sad and heavy bereavement of a daughter.

Among the out of town people who attended the funeral was William Block of Yankton, S.D. and a brother of Henry Block. --Castana Times.
