JOHN P. MARTEN

John P. Marten, 89, of Mapleton, Iowa, died Monday, January 26, 1981, in a nursing home in Mapleton.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Matthew Lutheran Church. The Rev. Philip Ritter officiated. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery under direction of the Walter Funeral home in Mapleton.

Mr. Marten was born August 1, 1891, to Albert and Catherine (Mundt) Marten in Crawford county, near Ricketts. He moved with his parents to Monona County near Mapleton in 1900 and lived the remainder of his life in the Mapleton community.

He married Minnie Jessen on January 14, 1914, at Ute. He farmed until 1923 when he moved into Mapleton. He owned and operated the Marten Recreation Parlor four years. He had been employed for the city of Mapleton as a policeman and on parks and street maintenance. He was employed by Dotson Garage as a mechanic for six years, was employed at a Mapleton bowling alley, by Willow Vale Golf Course as a caretaker for 16 years and as city hall custodian from 1965 to retirement in 1975.

Mr. Marten was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church.

Survivors include six sons, Edgar, Yucaipa, California, Donald of Lynnwood, Washington, Clifford of West Des Moines, Harold of Keokuk, John of Carlsbad, California, and Paul of Garden Grove, California; one daughter, Mrs. Ray (Luella) Brown of Yucaipa; 21 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Carl of Pomerory; and a sister, Mrs. Francis (Eliza) Vesey of Tucson, Arizonia.

He is preceded in death by his parents, one son, one daughter, five brothers and two sisters.

Pallbearers were Cornie Siebersma, Edward Russow, Randy Jochims, Bill Sanford, Eldon "Bud" Johnson and Dewey Jochims.
