Soldier Youth Killed in An Auto Turnover
Charles Ulven Is Dead and Two Companions Severely Injured

Soldier, Iowa – One person was killed, two were critically inured and two others escaped uninjured early Sunday morning when the automobile in which they were riding plunged over an embankment two miles west of Dow City.

Charles Ulven, 19, of Soldier, was killed instantly in the accident. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Evan Ulven and was a gasoline filling station operator here.

George Swenson, 22, of Soldier, suffered a fractured leg and a fractured skull. Ione Fister, 17, of Dunlap, suffered two fractured legs. Orvin Berg, Soldier and Maxine Fister, Dunlap, suffered only minor bruises.

Berg told authorities the automobile skidded while going up a hill. He said the car turned backward over a 10-foot embankment and was hidden from view of passing motorists on the highway above. He said he broke a widow to get out of the automobile. After failing to stop a motorist he began to walk. He walked two and a half miles before he could summon aid. Art Green of Denison, Crawford County sheriff, took the injured to Dow City first and then to the hospital at Carroll.

All but Berg remained in the automobile for more than two hours before help arrived.

The five were returning to Dunlap from Dow City where they had left a young woman at her home.
