John O. Jacobs, age 98, of Mapleton, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2018, at the Maple Heights Nursing Home of Mapleton, Iowa.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at the St. Matthew Lutheran Church of Mapleton, Iowa. Rev. Chris LaBoube will officiate; with Committal Services following in the Mount Hope Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the Loren Hollister Post No. 496 of the American Legion both of Mapleton, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m, Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at the St. Matthew Lutheran Church of Mapleton, Iowa. The Armstrong - Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Johann “John” Otto Bernhard Jacobs, the son of Otto and Emma (Wodtke) Jacobs, was born July 25, 1920, on the family farm near Mapleton, Iowa. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith on August 22, 1920 and confirmed on May 14, 1935, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church-Soldier Township of rural Charter Oak, IA. He graduated from eight grade from Immanuel Lutheran Parochial School in 1934.

John enlisted in the Army Air Corps in August of 1942. He honorably served in the South Pacific with the 22nd Bomb group of the 5th Air Force. After his discharge, John returned home to farm with his father Otto and he would later take over the operation of the family farm. John married Mary Ellen Owens on March 2, 1946, in Vermillion, South Dakota. The couple were blessed with six children: Carol, Cathy, Joan, Dennis, Patricia, and Donald. Mary Ellen unexpectedly passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 1, 1990. John was then united into marriage to Norma Jean Albertson on February 14, 1992. Norma Jean passed away in August of 2017.

John was a faithful member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church-Soldier Township and St. Matthew Lutheran Church of Mapleton. He was a member of the Mapleton American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496.

John is survived by daughters Carol (Bruce) Burton of Danbury, IA; Joan (Kurt) Rutz of Mart, TX; Patricia Jacobs of Inwood, IA; sons Dennis (Kim)of Butler, MO, and Donald of Wichita, KS; son-in-law Thomas (Marilyn) Arndorfer of Clear Lake, IA; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great great-granddaughter; brothers-in-law Jack Owens of Omaha, NE and Don (Karen) Owens of Evansville, IN; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary Ellen and daughter Catherine Arndorfer; brother Edmund Jacobs; sisters Johanna Bruhn and Malvina Jones; and wife Norma Jean.
