15 August 2018Dennis L. Marcum, 73, of Onawa, Iowa died Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at Unity Point Health- St. Luke’s in Sioux City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be 3:00 P.M. Saturday, August 11, 2018 at the Soldier Lutheran Church, Soldier, Iowa with Pastor Marsha Smith, officiating. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, August 10, 2018 with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. at the Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.
Dennis LeRoy Marcum was born September 29, 1944 near Pisgah, Iowa the son of Gerald and Viola (Pape) Marcum. He was raised in the Pisgah area and graduated from Pisgah High School in 1962.
After graduation, he farmed and started his dairy herd. On August 5, 1977, Dennis and Becky (Gosch) were united in marriage and lived on a farm west of Moorhead, Iowa. He continued working for farmers and became a full time foreman for Ron Shol, until Ron’s retirement. He then became employed by Moorhead Coop until his own retirement. Shortly following they moved off the farm to Onawa.
Some of Dennis’s past times included: deer hunting with the “Story City Crew”, his nephews, and other friends, fishing (always trying for the BIG ONE), bird hunting with his German Shorthair “Trixie”, and raising sheep along with his two miniature horses, “Minnie and Mickey”.
Every day became Christmas once he was introduced to EBAY, starting his numerous collections that grew and grew and GREW! He was an avid woodworker, but once retired became well known for his “Woodworking by Dennis” at craft shows, where he enjoyed meeting new people and sharing his many stories. But becoming a Grandpa was one of the greatest joys of his life.
Survivors include his wife of forty-one years, Becky Marcum; children and (grandchildren), Michelle Pierick (Michael and Kysa Pierick), Kimberly Mikkelsen (Alex (Jasmyn), and Nate Mikkelsen), Skye Marcum (Chance and Casen Richards), Damon (Jackie) Marcum (Brett, Matt, and Tyler Marcum), Shane Marcum (Joy and Elijah Marcum); and great-grandchildren, Braedyn, Tryton, and Ainsley Mikkelsen; sister, Connie (Harold) Kierscht; nephews, Kerry (Jill) Kierscht, Shawn (Louise) Kierscht; nieces, Jennifer (Rodney) Williams and Larissa Kierscht; and many other family and friends left to cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Viola (Pape) Marcum; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Herb and Alice Gosch; sisters-in-law, Sharon Mahlberg, Karen Gosch, and Linda Gosch; brothers-in-law, Rick Bianchini and Lloyd Myers; and also life-long friends, Terry Hull and Terry Joe Pape.
