18 July 2018Gertrude “Gertie” F. Northrup, 92, of Whiting, Iowa, passed away on Friday, July 6, 2018, at her home in Whiting.
Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday, July 12, 2018, at the Whiting Christian Church in Whiting, with Pastor Josh Weece officiating. Burial will follow in the Whiting City Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at the church in Whiting. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.
Gertrude “Gertie” Fae was born on May 7, 1926, in Lake Andes, South Dakota, to Pat H. and Rose A. (Smith) Cozad. Following high school and college, she taught in a one-room country school in South Dakota, and then in Winnebago, Nebraska. She later worked for IBP in Dakota City, Nebraska.
Gertie and Kenneth J. Northrup were united in marriage on November 28, 1947, in Butte, Nebraska. To this union, five children were born. The family moved to Whiting in 1972, where Kenneth was the superintendent of the Whiting School.
She enjoyed traveling, dancing, horses, attending rodeos, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Whiting Rodeo Association.
Survivors include four children, Joann and husband Robin Goodyear of Navarre, FL, Vicki and husband Marvin Petersen of Galva, IA, Terry and wife Erin Northrup of Dakota Dunes, SD, and Tracy Allman of Whiting, IA; grandchildren, Chris and wife Angie Goodyear, Ryan Goodyear, Toni and husband Chris Aschinger, Leslie and husband Tony Kriege, Nichole and husband Tim Jump, Dillon Northrup, Zach and wife Jovi Allman, and Alexandra Henry; and great-grandchildren, Ashlie Aschinger, Austin Aschinger, Maci Kriege, Matthew Kriege, Trenton Jump, Carmen Hoffman, Brielle Simpson, and Teagan Riley.
Gertie was preceded in death by her parents, Pat and Rose Cozad; her husband, Kenneth J. Northrup on October 3, 1997; one daughter, Cindy Northrup; three brothers, Pete Cozad, Henry Cozad, and Russell Cozad; and one sister, Wilma Holtschlag.
