Zada Rude, 101, Whiting, Iowa died Friday, February 1, 2002 at Pleasant View Care Center at Whiting, Iowa.

Zada was born September 13, 1900 the daughter of Carl and Myrta (Smalley) Spaulding at Castana, Iowa. She was raised in the area and graduated from Soldier High School. She was married October 2, 1919 to Andrew K. Rude at Soldier Lutheran Country Church. Andrew was a barber in Soldier before the couple began farming in the area. They later moved to the Hinton area. She kept house for Dr. Wagner in Sioux City, Iowa.

Andrew passed away in 1980 at Sioux City and Zada remained in her home until she was 90. She has resided at Pleasant View Care Center the past several years.

Zada was a breast cancer survivor and was featured by the American Cancer Society when she was 100 years old. She was a member of Grace Evangelical Church at Hinton and the LeMars American Legion Auxiliary after WWI.

She enjoyed gardening, canning and sewing; especially making quits.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Jane and her husband Duane Bromander of Sloan, Iowa and Margaret Gerdeman of Okoboji, Iowa, a son, Royce Rude of Rodney and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, an infant son, James and an infant daughter, Katherine; a grandson, Kevin Rude; a great- granddaughter, Shauna Marie Bromander; a daughter-in-law, Mary Rude and a son-in-law, Earl Gerdeman.

Funeral services were 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 4, 2002 at Evangelical Covenant Church at Sloan, Iowa with Pastor Richard Moore officiating. Special music was “In The Garden” and “Hymn of Promise.” Jack Steinhoff was soloist and Sandy Marnell pianist. Visitation was 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Sunday, February 3, 2002 at Rush Family Care Service at Onawa, Iowa. Burial was in Jordan Township Cemetery in rural Soldier, Iowa.

Casket bearers were Monte, Ron and Jeff Bromander, Dan and Jim Rude and Mark Riddle. Honorary bearers were Grandsons and Great Grandsons.
