Mapleton, Iowa – Shirley L. Porter, 49, of Mapleton, died Thursday, September 14, 1989, at her home. She had been ill for some time.

Services will be at 10:30 Monday at St. John’s United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Stephan Root officiating. Burial will be in the Willow Township Cemetery at Holly Springs. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. by the Rev. Richard Nelson, at the Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Mrs. Porter, the former Shirley Callaghan, was born April 19, 1940 in Sioux City, the daughter of Orvil and Eileen (Miller) Callaghan. She grew up on a farm near Smithland and attended Collage Corner County School and Smithland School. She married Harold Gene Porter May 26, 1957 in Mapleton. They lived in the Smithland area until 1963, when they moved to Mapleton.

She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, the Mapleton Camping Club, the Breakfast Club, the Royal Neighbors and the 500 Card Party Group.

Survivors include her husband; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Daniel at home and Charles and Angela of Mapleton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Dave Schmidt of Mapleton and Barbara and Daryl Pedersen of Denison; her parents; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Nancy and Carl McGrain of Mapleton, Jane and Dick Thomas of Salix and Susan and Chuck Mercer of Littleton, Colorado, six grandchildren, Stacy and Kurt Schmidt, Brandon, Dolly and Kayla Pederson and Justin Porter.
