A Good Citizen Has Departed This Life

Jay C. Peery Had Lived Long and Useful Life In Our Midst

Jay C. Peery 1862 – 1937

Jay C. Peery was laid to his final rest in St. Clair Cemetery Saturday afternoon, following simple funeral services held in the home here where J.E. McNamara of Castana, an old friend, spoke a few words in memorium. The Masonic ritualistic service was performed at the grave.

Though Jay’s span of life reached well past the allotted three score years and ten, the shadow of sadness overcasts us when called upon to part in life with a good friend and good citizen such as Jay Peery. The editor first knew Jay when we were a mere boy. Later on in life we were close friends and neighbors for many years. Whatever Jay turned his hand to do he did it well; always he gave the best that was in him to the task to which he was assigned. He loved life, nature, the birds, flowers and shrubs. We have often said that Jay could make a spot of desolate desert bloom into a Garden of Eden. While manager of the Community Service Station, just across the street from this office, he transformed the common surroundings into the most beautiful and artistic spot in town. While caretaker at St. Clair Cemetery comments were general in compliments to the neatness and well cared for grounds. Jay was a tireless worker. He was frugal. He did not believe in throwing money away on frivolity, but always was liberal to worthy people and causes. Jay was honest, upright, met all obligations of life manfully—financially and otherwise. Such was the good citizen who has just left us, in our estimation.

Jay C. Peery, second son of Henry and Anna E. Peery, was born in Clairmont, Missouri, June 21, 1862 and passed from life August 12, 1937 at the age of 75 years, 1 month and 21 days. He came to Onawa, Iowa in his 21st year. Since then his life had been practically all spent in this county. On December 14, 1893, at Ute, he was united in marriage to Emma Dorothy, and since 1915 he had been a resident of Ute. He became affiliated with the Masonic Lodge during his residence in Ute and was always interested in its progress. He was a good husband; a kind neighbor and friend and the whole community mourns with his beloved wife and relatives at his passing.

Besides his wife he leaves one brother, Luther and a half-sister, Mrs. N.A. Cooper, both of Burlington Junction, Missouri.

Those attending the funeral from a distance were his brother, Luther Peery and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Dorothy of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, besides many relatives and friends from Onawa, Mapleton and Castana, among whom were Mr. and Mrs. Charles D. Riley and son Charles William and H. E. Nutt.

John Duschl, Mapleton undertaker, was in charge of the burial.

Mrs. Peery and her sister and brothers want to thank the neighbors and friends for their help and sympathy.
