Marilyn E. Laffey, 80, of Onawa, Iowa, died Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Per Marilyn's wishes, services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.

Marilyn Elizabeth was born February 14, 1938, in rural Armstrong, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Grace (Wooster) Haworth. She grew up on a farm near Armstrong, Iowa, and graduated from Armstrong High School in 1956.

Marilyn and Jerry Laffey were united in marriage on December 29, 1957, in Armstrong, Iowa. Three children were born to this union, Rebecca, Brian and Greg.

As a youth, she worked various jobs in Armstrong, including the Dairy Queen, the East Side Café, and the Farmers Elevator where she became the bookkeeper after she returned from working in Minneapolis at a major bank.

While Jerry served in the military in Germany, Marilyn was an accountant for the United States Air Force. Once stateside, she was a bookkeeper for the University of South Dakota in the correspondence department while Jerry completed his Bachelor's degree in education.

After the couple moved to Onawa, Marilyn was hired on at Burgess Health Center where she served in various roles including bookkeeper, Comptroller, Office Manager, and most recently Gift Shop (volunteer) during her nearly 20 years with the hospital.

In 1976 she ran for Monona Country treasurer but lost to the incumbent.

She spent 8 years at the Iowa Department of Social Services as a case worker assisting numerous families and individuals in the Monona County area.

In 1990, she was hired by Mercy Medical Center as Patient Accounts Manager where she supervised a staff of 30 employees for seven years, inclusive of a short-term stint for Mercy at their Mapleton clinic.

She finished her career at the Monona County Courthouse where she was Clerk of Court for several years prior to her retirement in 2003.

She was former member of the Red Hat Society and local chapter of the Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed socializing with friends at book club, Women's Club, and her church. Most of all, she loved spending time with her kids and grandkids.

Survivors include her husband of sixty years, Jerry Laffey of Onawa, IA; Rebecca (Barry) Phipps of Omaha, NE, Brian (Lindsey) Laffey of Omaha, NE; and Greg Laffey of Iowa City, IA; her grandchildren, Benjamin Laffey, Connor Laffey, Madeline Laffey, Nickolas White, Maxwell White, and Viola Laffey; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Grace (Wooster) Haworth; brothers, Ronnie Haworth, Carl Haworth, and Clyde Haworth; and sister, Marjorie Sparrowgrove Carlen.

Memorials received will be directed to the Wesley United Methodist Church or may be directed to the church in her name and sent to 3700 Indian Hills Drive, Sioux City IA 51104.
