Monica D. (Sasges) Smith 1918 - 2017

Monica D. (Sasges) Smith, died on Tuesday, Nov. 14. She was born in Mapleton on Jan. 7, 1918, to Nicholas and Anna Flammang. She married Vernon Sasges on June 2, 1940. To that union, six children were born.

Vernon died Dec. 2, 1976. On May 16, 1981, Monica married Erwin Smith. Erwin died on April 6, 1999.

Monica loved to garden, crochet and embroider. When she was 88 years old, she embroidered a quilt showing the birds of all 50 states for each of her children. One of her quilts won grand champion first prize at the Colorado State Fair.

Monica was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernon Sasges; second, husband Erwin Smith; daughter, Roseland Kennedy; two brothers, Matthew Flammang and Edgar Flammang; and four sisters, Elizabeth Uhl, Theresa Sachau, Rita Ferdig, and Colletta Flammang; daughter-in-law, Doris Sasges; and son-in-law David Kennedy.

She is survived by brother, Jerome Flammang; sister, Mary Gormally; and five children, Richard Sasges of Overton, Nev., Patricia Moore of Crete, Neb., Colleen Marley of Omaha, Neb., Sheryl Moyers of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., and Wayne Sasges of Grand Island, Neb.; 13 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 4-5 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 19, at Bethany Funeral Home in LaVista, Neb., with a rosary following.

Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 20, at Saint Columbkille Catholic Church in Papillion, Neb.

Burial following in Mapleton.
