Raymond Kurth 1936 - 2017

Raymond Kurth, 80, of Livermore, Calif., passed away Thursday, Oct. 5, peacefully in his home surrounded by his loved ones.

Ray was born on Dec. 6, 1936, in Mapleton. He graduated from Mapleton High in 1955 and pursued a career with the Army Corp of Engineers. He married Mary Braden in 1956 and they had four children.

Ray played and loved sports and was a dedicated Iowa Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed watching and supporting his children’s and grandchildren’s athletics.

After a divorce, his career brought him to Burlington where he met Carol Cunningham. Ray and Carol were married in Burlington on Jan. 8, 1982, and they ultimately relocated to Murrieta, Calif.

Ray retired in 1996 after working for the Corps of Engineers for 36 years and receiving several commendations for his years of service.

Ray is survived by his wife, Carol; his sister, Gloria Pattison; his sons, Chuck (Conchita) Kurth of Livermore Calif., Ronald (Jackie) Kurth of Sergeant Bluff, Mark (Jane) Kurth of Des Moines; his daughter, Terri (Philip) Shatter of Sunnyvale, Texas; his grandsons, Colton, Christian, Max, Schylar, and Zachary; and his granddaughters, Carlee and Felicia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Frieda Kurth, and his sisters, Luella, Florene, Donna, and Dorothy.

A private family memorial service took place at Callaghan Mortuary in Livermore and was officiated by Pastor Ken Wolter of Cornerstone Church.

The family would like to thank Hope Hospice and Tri Valley Personal Home Health Care Services for their wonderful care during his last days.
