Frank Sabatka Jr., 92, of Onawa, Iowa, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, October 30, 2017.

Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, November 4, 2017, at the Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, with Pastor Michael Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in the Onawa Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Army and the David McNeill American Legion Post #129 of Onawa. Visitation will be 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. Friday, November 3, 2017, at the Rush Family Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Frank was born on July 17, 1925, to Frank Sr. and Liddie (Votova) Sabatka, at their home in Valparaiso, Nebraska. He was the youngest of four children. His parents moved to Onawa, Iowa, in 1931, where he lived for the remainder of his life. He attended Onawa schools until the 11th grade, when he joined the United States Army on August 14, 1945. In the Army, he served his country as a technician fifth grade and airplane and engine mechanic at Fort Sill in Oklahoma. He was honorably discharged on November 15, 1946.

On January 8, 1950, Frank married the love of his life, Esther Marie Holverson. Through their unity, they were blessed with three children, Marguirite, Marilyn, and Jerry.

He worked various mechanic jobs after his service in the Army, notably at his own Pontiac dealership. He started as the Chief Mechanic with the Iowa Department of Transportation on January 1, 1961. Frank retired from the DOT on December 31, 1987, and continued to pursue his passion of cars and traveling.

Frank was well known in the community for his strong work ethic, his mechanical and creative skill set, and his love for racing, especially his number "10" stockcar.

He was a member of the First Christian Church and of the David McNeill American Legion Post #129, both of Onawa.

Survivors include his children, Marquirite Walker, Marilyn (Mike) Kelley, and Jerry Sabatka; eleven grandchildren, Brett Walker, Tristin Walker, Arianna Walker, Felicia (Randy) Collison, Megan (Devin) Yeager, Paige Framke, Jeremy Sabatka, Lindsey Sabatka, and Tucker Harl; two step-grandchildren, Pat (Katie) Kelley and Robert (Danielle Wickersham) Kelley; eleven great-grandchildren, Bowen Walker, Kiaha Walker, Nova Walker, Ryan Dougherty, Tyler Walker, Brennan Walker, Joseph Walker, Cade Collison, Colby Collison, Maxson Yeager, Jemma Sabatka, and McKenna Frye; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Sabatka; his parents, Frank Sr. and Liddie Sabatka; one sister, Blanche West and husband Otto; two brothers, Emil Sabatka and wife Belva, and Edward Sabatka and wife Katherine; his granddaughter, Melissa Framke; and his grandson, Kurt Walker.

Memorials in Frank's memory may be directed to Burgess Home Health/Hospice in Onawa, Iowa.
