SLOAN, Iowa -- Winston Joseph "Sports" Koenig, 90, of Sloan died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital after a several week illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Evangelical Covenant Church in Sloan, with the Rev. Richard Moore and Dr. Emery Killian officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Albaton, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church in Sloan. The Larkin Northside Funeral Home of Sioux City is handling the arrangements. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Winston was born on Sept. 9, 1915, in rural Sloan, the son of Charles and Sena G. (Brenden) Koenig. He grew up in the Albaton area and graduated from Sloan High School in 1934. He attended business college and worked in Sioux City. In 1939, he started farming with his dad on the home farm. His mother, Sena, passed away in 1944 and his father, Charles, died in 1976. Winston enlisted in the Merchant Marines during World War II.

He was united in marriage to Donna Godsey on Feb. 10, 1946, in Sloan, Iowa. From this union four children were born, Christine, Connie, Curtiss and Mark. Winston worked as a personal property assessor for Sloan, Willow and Lakeport Townships.

He was a member of the Sloan Evangelical Covenant Church, where he served on the board. He also served on the Farmers Cereal Co-Op Board. He was also the chairman of McCandless Intra County drainage ditch for eight years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 295 in Sloan. Winston enjoyed and supported all sporting events in the Sloan community.

Survivors include his wife, Donna of Sloan; two daughters, Christine Beauperthuy of rural Peyton, Colo. and Connie and her husband, Paul Collison, of rural Onawa, Iowa; two sons, Curtiss and his wife, Lisa, of rural Sloan and Mark of Denver, Colo.; eight grandchildren, Jon Collison, Jen Collison, Gabe Beauperthuy, Brian Koenig, Brad Koenig, Jessica Koenig, Beau Koenig and Elle Koenig Hanafin; and four great-grandchildren, Tyson, Gabriella, Jaxon and Janie.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Lowell as an infant and Carroll.
