Shirley A. Fender, 75, of Onawa, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017, after a battle with colon cancer.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Tim Cramer officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Shirley was born on Sept. 10, 1942, at her great-grandmother's home north of the Monona County Courthouse, to Maurice A. and Lauretta I. (Johns) Golden. She attended Mondamin Elementary School in Mondamin, Iowa, until the spring of fifth grade when her family moved to Onawa. She attended Onawa Community School and graduated from Onawa High School in 1961, where she participated in vocal music, Science Club, and library monitor.

She then attended secretarial school at C.E. School of Commerce in Omaha. After graduating, she worked at L.G. Doup Company in Omaha before spending six months at her aunt's house in Orlando, Fla., where she worked in her aunt's office at Ardimen Associates.

She returned home in June 1964, and married Bert A. Fender on July 12, 1964, at Onawa United Methodist Church. She worked at Oliver Agency in Onawa, more than 30 years at Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa, and the last few years at Act II in Onawa.

She was a member of the Jaycee's in the 1970s, Onawa United Methodist Church, where she was a member of Sarah Circle and where she held different offices and held different church offices, the American Legion David McNeill Auxiliary Post 129 in Onawa, and a Friendship Bible Study. She liked to collect dolls, read, and work crossword puzzles. She loved the time spent with her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Bert A. Fender of Onawa; two sons, Thomas A. Fender and wife, Ellen (Davis) of Medical Lake, Wash., and Loren A. Fender and fiancee, Sandra Raymond of Onawa; five grandchildren, LLythellen (Fender) and husband, Preston Jackson of Wallace, Idaho, Heath Puterbaugh of Des Moines, Lucinda (Fender) and husband, Jon Roach of Onawa, Kayla (Fender) Anderson and fiance, Mark Stockton of Merrill, Iowa, and Alexandria "Lulu" Fender of Onawa; eight great-grandchildren, Keira Kono and Madison Roach of Onawa, Jasmine Fryer and McKenzie Jackson of Wallace, and Brenleigh Anderson, Breckin McKnight, Bristol Stockton, and Bronc Stockton, all of Merrill; one sister and her husband, Carol and Dean DeLashmutt of Sioux Falls, S.D.; one brother and his wife, Ted and Sherry Golden of Turin, Iowa; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Maurice and Lauretta Golden; her in-laws, Leslie and Henrietta Fender; a brother and sister-in-law, Maurice and Shirley M. Golden; a sister, Nancy Foster; a grandson, LLythaniele Fender; and three brothers-in-law, Lyle Fender, Roy Fender, and Dale Fender.
