Family & friends remember Richard Brooks

Richard D Brooks, age 53 of Arizona died Saturday, November 18,2006 in Phoenix. Arizona. Services were held 2 p.m. Saturday, November 25 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton with Rev Fred Pilecki officiating. Burial was in Mt Hope Cemetery, Mapleton. Lisa MacWilliams Brooks was the violinist.

Richard Dean Brooks was born on June 26, 1953, in Honolulu, Hawaii to Richard D and Elizabeth (Hahn) Brooks. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa, then served in the Air Force. He received a bachelor's degree in geology from Boise State University in 1980, then went on to receive a graduate degree in Gemology from the Gemological Institute of America in 1987 and an Associate of Applied Science degree in Electronics and Computer engineering Technology from Hamilton College in 1998. He worked in Idaho and Nevada as a field geologist, then in retail jewelry in Des Moines and most recently as an information technology operations specialist in Des Moines and Phoenix. Besides his formal education, Richard was an avid scholar of history and philosophy.

He loved rock hounding, especially in the desert, and resided for the last several years in Phoenix, Arizona. He will be remembered for his ready smile and quick wit.

He is survived by his mother, Elizabeth (Hahn) Brooks of Johnston, Iowa, three sisters, Myra Brooks of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Paula (Mike) Pahl of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, and Lonna Brooks (Joel Winograd) of Rio, Wisconsin, three nephews, six nieces, and two grand-nephews.

Memorial gifts will be donated to the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation.

Pallbearers were Tom Bachmann, Bruce Bachmann, Brian Bachmann, Jimmy Berlin, Mark Hahn, Mike Hahn and Gary Hahn.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.
