11 October 2017Marvin L. VandenHull, 82, of Onawa Iowa died on Friday, October 6, 2017, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.
Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at the Onawa United Methodist Church in Onawa, Iowa with Pastor Tim Cramer officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, October 10, 2017 in the East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon, Iowa. Visitation will be 4:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. Monday, October 9, 2017 with a prayer service at 6:30 P.M at Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.
Marvin Lynn was born on May 7, 1935, in Archer, Iowa the son of Garrett and Johanna (Beuzekom) VandenHull. Marvin attended Archer High School. He shared that the highlight of his high school years was falling in love with his sweetheart of nearly 63 years. Other high school highlights for him were athletics, especially playing baseball and basketball. Marvin continued his love for baseball by coaching several little league teams through the years. He followed the St. Louis Cardinals since he was a young child.
Marvin and Marylis Philby were united in marriage on November 24, 1954 in Spencer, Iowa. Five children were born to this union, Lyle, Lori, Gary, Shari, and Scott.
Marvin started working for Northwestern Bell in 1954 in Sheldon and transferred to Onawa in 1967. He retired from the telephone company in 1994.
After retirement, Marvin and Marylis enjoyed wintering in Alamo Rec-Veh Park in Texas for 20 years making many lasting friendships. In their early years, Marvin and Marylis enjoyed square dancing together and camping trips with their five children. Marvin's other hobbies were golf, carpentry work including building his current residence and later building dollhouses for his granddaughters. Music was a big part of Marvin's life. He especially enjoyed Gospel Quartets.
Marvin will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving dad, active grandpa, and a friend to many.
Marvin was a member of the Onawa United Methodist Church and a former member of the Onawa Fire Department and Onawa Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 63 years, Marylis VandenHull of Onawa, IA; his children, Lyle (Denise) VandenHull of Onawa, IA, Lori (Gary) Brandt of Waterloo, IA, Gary VandenHull of Onawa, IA, Shari (Steve) Gantz of Grinnell, IA, and Scott (Kim) VandenHull of Plattsmouth, NE; ten grandchildren, Melissa Hill, Michelle (Adam) Nygaard, Diana (Rick) Bauer, Kacie (Ian) VandenHull, Jennifer (Michael) Meyer, Stephanie (Owen) Fuller, David (Michelle) Gantz, Matt Zanker, Samuel VandenHull, and Johanna VandenHull; sixteen great-grandchildren, Antheiyaleigh, Caiden, Cohen, Ayvalynn, Jayden, Michael, William, Larinda, Gabriella, Macy, Omri, Oliver, Jacob, Christopher, Lucas, and Timothy; one sister, Lucille Van Zee of Sioux Center, IA; one sister-in-law, Esther VandenHull of Sheldon, IA; and one brother-in-law, Norman (Sharon) Philby of Humboldt, IA; and many nephews, nieces, and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents, Garrett and Johanna VandenHull; two brothers, Jacob (Viola) VandenHull and John VandenHull; one brother-in-law, Richard Van Zee; and a grandson, Steven Amos Gantz, Jr.
