TURIN, Iowa -- Henry Van Iperen, 89, of Onawa, Iowa, formerly of Turin, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, with his nephews, the Rev. Harlan Van Oort and the Rev. Sylvester Van Oort officiating. Burial will be in Belvidere Cemetery, Turin. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Henry was born Feb. 8, 1917, on the family farm near Matlock, Iowa, the son of Schalk and Dirkje (Van Kley) Van Iperen and the eighth of 10 children. He helped his father farm and had his favorite team of horses. He also combined trapping and hunting with the farm work as he took his "equipment" with him to the field.

He joined the U.S. Army on March 24, 1942, and served in the European African Middle Eastern Theater during World War II. He was discharged on Nov. 15, 1945. After coming home from the service, he bought a farm south of Sheldon, Iowa. As a child, he had always dreamed of having a pony, now was his chance! He had horses of all kinds and sizes. He had a group of ponies the children of the community came to ride and would lend Girls Scouts and 4-H groups a wagon and team to go camping at Hills Park in Sheldon.

He relocated to Turin in 1960, where he bought a farm which is now a part of Loess Hills. Due to ill health, he moved to Onawa.

He was a member of the American Legion Peter A. Hansen Post 365 and Monona County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2694.

Survivors include a sister, Dorothy Byker of Orange City, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Adriana Van Iperen of Hartley, Iowa; 38 nieces and nephews; and special friends, Beth and Jene Hightree of Onawa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and eight siblings and their spouses, Peter and Ollie Van Iperen, Orren and Maybelle Van Iperen, Steve and Nellie Van Iperen, Burton Van Iperen, Gertie and Charlie Harmelink, Nellie and Henry Van Oort, Jennie and Case Ver Mulm, Anne and Bill Jiskoot and John Byker.
