MOORHEAD, Iowa -- Frederick C. "Bill" Knudsen, 78, of Onawa, Iowa, formerly of Moorhead, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Dennis Olsen officiating. Burial will be in Spring Valley, Moorhead, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Stevens Kelley Post 665 and the Monona County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2694. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Bill was born Dec. 23, 1926, in the family farm in Moorhead, the son of Rasmus and Zora Valentine (Conyers) Knudsen. He graduated from Blencoe (Iowa) High School before entering the U.S. Army, assigned to the 127th Airborne Engineers during World War II. He was a sergeant and was a paratrooper and construction foreman in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, stationed in Japan.

He married Doris Dunlop on Sept. 6, 1947, in Onawa. The couple made their home on the family farm, where he was a life-long farmer. This was his home for all his life except for the years he spent in the Army. Doris passed away Nov. 9, 1980, in Onawa. He later married Sarah Bowler in September 1994, in Sioux City.

He was a member of First Christian Church, American Legion Stevens Kelley Post 665 of Blencoe, Iowa, and the Monona County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2694. He served on the West Monona School board and was a volunteer in the Moorhead Loess Hill Information Center.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah; two daughters and their husbands, Denise and Jim Johnson of Onawa and Dawn Knudsen-Dahm and John Dahm of Lakeville, Minn.; four grandchildren, Alexandra and Jasmine Dahm, both of Lakeville, Minn., 1st Lt. Bill Johnson of Moody Air Force Base, Ga., and Sarah Johnson of Fayetteville, Ark.

In addition to his wife, Doris, he was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Versel.
