James William was born on October 18, 1952 in Denison, Iowa the son of Virgil H. and Janet I. (Vahler) Ehlers. He graduated from East Monona High School in 1970.

Jim Ehlers and Jill Wilson were united in marriage on August 17, 1973 at the Moorhead Christian Church in Moorhead, Iowa.

Jim was employed by the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier for many years, a job which he dearly loved while being outside, observing wildlife, and making many friends. Prior positions Jim had were Monona County Roads at the Soldier Shed, Chase Electric, Soldier Lumber, and self-employed contractor. He took great pride in the major addition remodel that he did to their home.

Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, and any other outdoor activities. He was an avid western novel reader. He was an Iowa Hawkeye fan and also an Iowa State fan (only if they were not playing Iowa). He always bid ingenting (Danish for zero) while playing Oh Hell. He loved his dogs and raising Vizsla puppies. He also enjoyed raising pigs and quarter horses in the past too.

Jim was a member of the Soldier Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Iowa Walleye Tournament Trail.

Survivors include his wife, Jill Ehlers of Soldier, IA; his dog, Riley (age 5 and a shorty Jack Russell); his siblings, Marlene (Dan) Cooper of Mapleton, IA, Rick (Joy) Ehlers of Sioux Falls, SD, and Cindy (Ron) Holt of Soldier, IA; five godchildren; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Janet Ehlers; his grandparents, Arnold and Vesta Melby and Paul and Edith Vahler; infant brother, Bruce Ehlers; and infant niece, Heather Cooper.

Jim gave to others through his eye donation to the Iowa Lions Eye Bank.
