Herbert N. Benjamin, 82, Onawa, Iowa died Thursday, September 29, 2005 at a Sioux City hospital.

Herbert was born April 21, 1923 at Onawa, Iowa, the' son of Thomas "Bert" and Edith (Messing) Benjamin. He attended Murphy Country School and graduated from Onawa High School. July, 1944, he joined the United States Army and was a rifleman in the 60t h Infantry Company A. During World War II, he was in the Rhincland and Central Europe campaigns. After his discharge, June, 1946, he returned to rural Onawa where he farmed until his retirement when he moved to Onawa. He had been a resident of Elmwood Care Centre at Onawa, the last five years.

Survivors include two sisters, Virginia Beck of Onawa and Helen Ryan of Blencoe, IA; a brother, Paul M. Benjamin of Onawa and two sisters-in-law, Verla Benjamin of Onawa and Berniece Benjamin of South Sioux City, NE.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Rev. Father George Benjamin, Maurice Benjamin and Tom Benjamin; a sister, Mary Benjamin, a brother-in-law, Royce Beck and a nephew Matthew Benjamin.

A funeral mass was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 3, 2005 at St. John's Catholic Church at Onawa with Father Donald Smith, celebrant. Music selections were "Ave Maria", "On Eagle's Wings" and "How Great Thou Art". Gary Linder was cantor and Lou Hewitt, organist. Visitation was from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday with a Scriptural prayer service at 7:00 p.m. followed by the Rosary at Rush Family Care Service, Onawa. Burial was in Onawa Cemetery with military honors conducted by the United States Army.

Casket bearers were Mike Beck, Leo Benjamin, Ed Benjamin, Mike Ryan, Jim Bock and Bill Beck.
