Esther M. Johnson, 96, of Onawa, Iowa passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.

Memorial services will be 1:30 P.M. Saturday, June 3, 2017, at Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa, Iowa with Vicar Shari Schwedhelm, officiating. Private family burial will be in the Onawa Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Esther Marie was born August 18, 1920, on a farm near Cylinder, Iowa, the daughter of Ludwig and Cecelia (Eskeland) Johnson. She graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1937. She furthered her education at Emmetsburg Junior College and earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1969 from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. She taught country school for twelve years, and later at West Monona Community Schools for over twenty years.

Esther and Robert J. Johnson were united in marriage on March 28, 1946 in Cylinder, Iowa. To this union, three children were born, Linda, Sandy, and Steve. Robert preceded her in death on June 10, 2003.

Esther was very active in her community. She was a member of the Burgess Health Center Auxiliary, Onawa Women's Club, P.E.O., Bridge Club, and the Red Hat Society. She also volunteered at Act II.

Esther was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa where she was very active in her ladies circle and ladies aid.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Bruce) Jensen of Mason City, IA and Sandy (Marty) McGrane of West Des Moines, IA; her son, Steve (Lynn) Johnson of Arlington, NE; ten grandchildren, Sarah Jensen, Matt (Lauren) Jensen, Mark McGrane, Danny McGrane, Molly (Corbin) Cleary, Kelly (Michael) Cirone, Maura (Derik) George, Jordan Johnson, Taylor (Emily) Johnson, and Riley Johnson; three great-grandchildren, Evan, Aubrey, & Alex George; one sister, Ruth Nelson of Phoenix, AZ; and many special nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert J. Johnson; and five brothers, John, Lester, Elmer, Haakin, and Loyd Johnson.

Memorials in Esther's memory may be directed to Faith Lutheran Church, Onawa, Iowa or Burgess Hospice, Onawa, Iowa.
