Onawa, Iowa – William G. Gantz, 66, of Onawa died Tuesday, November 5, 1996 at the Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, following a brief illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Christian Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Donald R. Ludwick officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery, with Masonic rites by Vesper Lodge 223 A.F. & A.M.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.

Mr. Gantz was born February 25, 1930, in Onawa, the son of Amos and Myrtle (Johnson) Gantz. He resided in the same home where he was born. He was raised by his grandparents, William and Emma Gantz. He graduated from Onawa High School in 1948 at which time he joined the Navy with a submarine division. He married Carol Fender on June 24, 1951. He farmed near Onawa and was employed with the U.S. Postal Service for 20 years, retiring as Postmaster in 1980. He married Joyce Buser in May 1985.

Mr. Gantz was a member of the Christian Church and many organizations. He was post officer of the Iowa Postmaster’s Association, past president of Monona County Postmaster’s Association, member of the Vesper Lodge 223 A.F. & A.M. of Onawa, the Sioux City Consistory, Abu-Beker Shrine Temple, the Cycle Corps of Abu-Beker Shrine, past president of the Kiwanis Club of Onawa, past president of the Eagles Lodge in Onawa, a deacon in the Onawa Congregation Church, a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and Queen Esther Chapter Order of the Eastern Star 222.

Survivors include his special friend, Ruby Jewell; one daughter, Patricia Ruby of Lawton, Iowa; two sons and their wives, Bill Jr. and Cindy of Onawa and Steve and Shari of Grinnell, Iowa; one sister and her husband, Donna and Bob Ollar of Phelan, California; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
