Janice was born on February 22, 1948 in Grove, Oklahoma. She graduated from Grove High School with the class of 1966 and and attended Missouri Southern University graduating from Northeastern Oklahoma State University with her degree in English.

Janice married Don Shero in Grove, Oklahoma. Janice taught English in Afton and Ralston Oklahoma while Don finished his degree at Oklahoma State. They then moved to South Sioux City, Nebraska and Janice taught at South Sioux City schools. The couple relocated to Mapleton, Iowa in 1978 and Janice taught at Maple Valley. She later taught at Omaha Nation in Macy, Nebraska, before she retired. She was a tireless advocate for her students, especially those in her Special Education classes. Her generosity, understanding, and belief in them enabled many of her students to find success in life.

Janice’s love for people defined her family. Together, she and Don were blessed with three sons Greg, Eric, and Brian. Their daughter, Allison, passed away shortly after birth. She and Don spent many hours traveling to ball games and school activities the boys were involved in. Janice was a fixture at the home football games in Mapleton, cooking burgers for the fans. After the younger boys left home, Janice and Greg made a weekly ritual out of shopping trips together.

She was a member of Faith Bible Church of Mapleton, Iowa. In addition to teaching, Janice was involved in many community and school activities, including Friends of the Library, and the Maple Valley Education Association.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents Albert and Abbie Rice, infant daughter Allison Shero, sisters Delorise Phelps and Barbara Wellman, brother Monte Rice, brother-in-law Jack Shero, sister-in-law Suzanne Wagner, and brothers-in-law, Everett Price, Leon Dubois, and Rex Landrum.

Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 49 years, Don Shero of Mapleton, Iowa; sons, Greg Shero of Mapleton, Iowa, Eric (Friend Jennifer Glagola) of Kansas City, Missouri, and Brian (Amy) Shero of Savage, Minnesota; granddaughters, Evelynn and Amanda Shero of Savage, Minnesota; sisters, Imogene DuBois, Margaret Landrum, and Ruby Price all of Oklahoma; brother, Curtis Rice of Alabama; mother and father in-law John and Pauline Shero of Wilburton, Oklahoma; brother-in-law John Shero of San Antonio, Texas; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. She especially enjoyed coffee on the front porch with Mary Ann, Jean and friends.
