Richard "Dick" Shaffer, 64, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Morningside Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kevin Lee officiating. A luncheon and remembrance will follow the service Monday at the Elk's Lodge 112. Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.

Dick Shaffer was born April 11, 1943, in Mapleton, Iowa, the son of Harold and Bernice (Christensen) Shaffer. He graduated from Moorhead (Iowa) Community School in 1961, where he still holds the basketball scoring record.

He served in the U.S. Navy for six years. This is where his life long career as a barber began. After his discharge, he worked as a barber at the Greenville Barber Shop, then taught at the Sioux City Barber College for 10 years. For the past 15 years, he had owned and operated the Leed's Barbershop in Sioux City.

In addition to spending time with his family and friends, he enjoyed many outdoor activities including fishing, roping, horseshoes and gardening. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1973 and the Elk's Lodge 112. He was a previous member of the Kiwanis Club.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy; two sons, Troy Peters and his wife, Stephanie of Sioux City and Rick Shaffer of Sioux City; a daughter, Kris Quastad of Armstrong, Iowa; a sister and her husband, Bonnie and Glen Holst of Moville, Iowa; a brother, Dean Shaffer of Columbus, Neb.; and three grandchildren, Travis, Colton and Jaden.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Shaffer; and his mother, Bernice Shaffer.
